Bridget of Sweden

- Short Bio
Daughter to a wealthy governor and provincial judge of Uppland, Bridget was born into a family of deep piety, and from the age of 7, was favored by visions and illuminations that defined her life. She was carefully educated by her aunt after her mother’s death. At 13, she married Ulf Gudmarsson, who was then 18. Their marriage was blessed with 8 children, and her sanctity and charity acquired her great influence over her husband and theologians, and earned esteemed positions in various courts. Ulf died after a pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostella in Spain, and Bridget turned more completely to religious devotion, writing down her more frequent visions. She founded the Brigittines/Order of St Savior, and dedicated herself to the moral uplifting of the period. She spent her last years in Rome, acquired papal approval for her order and devoted her actions to guidance and inspiration of others to a deeper Christian life. After death, her remains were interred in her order’s chief monastery in Vadstena, Sweden.
